Sowerby "Sowerby Drape" Black Amethyst Vase

Description

I found this Sowerby Drape vase in an antique store in Gainesboro, Tennessee. I had never seen anything like it and, not knowing the pattern name, could not find it on David Doty's website. So, I called my wife and sent her a picture and had her to start looking, telling her it was black amethyst.

In the meantime, I took it to the counter and talked them into a really low price and bought it.

After I posted it on Facebook, who else but Glen Thistlewood told me that it was a scarce item and was seldom seen anywhere. Visit her page showing more examples of this vase here on Carnival Glass Worldwide.

Dave Doty has it listed on his website here as well under Sowerby Drape.

It's 9 1/2" tall  and has a 4 1/2" base diameter.

David Richards wrote in to say, "This was part of Sowerby's move into Art Deco design in the 1920's. You need to see it in their other finishes such as this example in pink frosted glass to fully appreciate the beauty of the design. It's such a pity they only iridised black amethyst examples which hides the exquisite geometrical design carried through to the base."
