Northwood Three Fruits Purple Smooth Back Plate

Description

I purchased this in 2013 at an New England Carnival Glass Association convention where I had the time of my life! I was overcome by the beauty of this plate the very moment I laid eyes on it, during the preview, where Tom Burns, the auctioneer, pointed it out to me. He said it was his favorite piece in the auction. I agreed I'd never seen a prettier one. It literally took my breath away.

I loved every detail of it, from the thick, ~~stretchy~~ iridescence along the borders to the radium electric shine throughout. I couldn't resist those mouth-watering, dripping-wet, Bing cherries, those luscious apples (or some say plums, whatever you like...) with their intricate true-to-life details, and the pair of pears that dangle like joyful wedding bells. I noticed the veined, stippled leaves are oddly the same for all three fruit. Well, that's the fantasy that is Carnival Glass!

This plate was such a beautiful melody of color that I fondly named it "Three Fruits Symphony". Its beauty is beyond compare but it's important to express how this plate is most beautiful and special to me. It was actually a key turning point in my life. I will never forget the group effort of all the wonderful people who bought this for me in my absence the day of the auction. I'm so proud to be a member of this club of outstanding friends and fellow collectors who selflessly bent over backwards to make it mine. I thought how priviledged I was to have these people in my life and how I wished I could share this plate with them and its story with other collectors somehow. It's that wish that became the inspiration for the creation of this website, The Carnival Glass Showcase. Long live the NECGA!
