Northwood Acorn Burrs White Punch Bowl Set

Description

I purchased this pretty pastel icy white Acorn Burrs punch set during the Sunshine State convention in Orlando, Florida on January 29, 2011. The last photo is from the Jim Wroda Auction Services catalog. This auction represented the collection of John & Loretta Nielsen and a few items from other collections.

There were many beautiful punch sets at this auction. I managed to come away with three that were very important to me.  I'm fortunate to have purchased the bulk of my punch bowl collection during a time span where they seemed to be coming from out of the woodwork. Today, they are certainly not as plentiful and the cost has risen tremendously.

This punch bowl set has an overall height of 10.75" and is almost just as wide at 11". The bowl alone is 5.5" tall and so is the pedestal, which is 6.25" wide at the base and 4.5" across the top where it receives the bowl.

I fell in love with this one the moment I laid eyes on it. It was so dainty and pastel with glints of pinks, baby blues, greens and gold. It was just gleaming and twinkling to beat the band. Like all three Carnival Glass pastel colors (ice blue, ice green & white) it loves to be photographed against a dark background where the iridescence seems to just leaps into action. It holds its own in a natural setting as well.

It also came with six cups to complete the set, which is a plus, although I have to say the lack of cups for any gorgeous punch bowl has never made me think twice about buying it. I don't display all my punch bowls with their cups. They're hard to dust and take up a lot of real estate.

Acorn Burrs is pretty much my favorite pattern. Although I am not a strong pattern collector, I did want to obtain all the colors possible in this one. So far, I have one in amethyst, emerald green, plain green, marigold, ice blue, ice green, Luna (not iridized), and this one in white.

So, which colors don't I have? Well, my friend Gary Lickver had one in cobalt blue, the only one reported, which he sold to Mr. Carlton Tarkington, a man of impeccable taste! I believe there has been at least one lime green reported as well. There are also at least three known in aqua opalescent, the stuff legends are made of.

I had fun displaying all these punch bowls together, interspersed with Tree Trunk funeral vases, to create a mesmerizing "Enchanted Forest" effect like no other!
