U.S. Glass Palm Beach Marigold Goofus Glass Plate

Description

Goofus Glass was made just before Carnival glass but lots of people include it in their Carnival glass collections because it was hand-painted and then iridized. The name Goofus, meaning a trick played on the public, was given to this glass because the paint would wear and flake away unexpectedly if it was used and washed often. For this reason it's hard to find Goofus glass in good shape like this plate. This was purchased from a room display at the 2013 Tampa Bay convention.

In looking through the center of this particular plate, it appears to be amethyst but it isn't. It has a pale blush applied over its clear glass center, known as the "marie". It measures 7" across and it's pretty hefty for its size at .83 lbs.
