Northwood Three Fruits Intaglio Marigold Footed Bowl

Description

This Northwood three-footed bowl in marigold is the only example known of its kind. It was purchased during an online live bidding session during the 2017 Tampa Bay Carnival Glass convention auction featuring the Gary & Sharon Vandevander Collection.

If it looks familiar, it was featured on the cover of the 12th Edition of the Standard Encyclopedia of Carnival Glass by Mike Carwile.

It measures 7" wide and bears the Northwood "N".

Mike Carwile actually purchased this bowl on eBay and sold it to Gary Vandevander after he took the liberty of giving it a good name and photographing it for the cover of his reference book.

The "intaglio" or incised (sunken-in, concave, not raised) pattern is on the outside of the bowl featuring three fruits all around; cherries, plums (or apples) and possibly berries. The inside is plain and smooth, with no pattern at all.

The next to last photo shows another Northwood item in blue that has the same ridged, cascading, scalloped, vertical design as the Three Fruits Intaglio. My friend David Richards brought this pattern called Klondyke to my attention. It does have the same design along the top of the cascade, although along the sides of the cascades is different. The Klondyke has wavy lines down both sides where The Three Fruits Intaglio has a pretty sunrise pattern along the sides of its cascades. They really show up well in the last photo.

Both patterns also have similar feet that are ribbed and curled and they're both marked with the Northwood N in a circle. It is very reassuring to see the cascade pattern was used during the pre-Carnival Glass era when pattern glass was prevalent. Seeing none other, it really cements the idea that this one of a kind Three Fruits Intaglio bowl did indeed stem from the talents of Northwood.
