Northwood Grape & Cable Green Powder Jar & Other Examples

Description

Featured here is an exceptional Northwood Grape & Cable green powder jar. What is most unusual about this particular jar is that the bottom exterior of the jar base has been iridized in addition to the exterior sides. It had been previously reported in error that any Carnival Glass with an iridized bottom is a fake or reproduction. This is not the case at all as can be seen in the attached photos of the green powder jar (item B) and also another in marigold (item C). In addition to these Northwood examples, we also have a Dugan Lined Lattice vase that is without doubt genuinely antique that also sports an iridized bottom or base.

We show a total of six Grape & Cable powder jars; they all carry the Northwood trademark. Each jar is labeled in the photos: Please click on each photo twice to enlarge for a better view of all the details.

  • A is amethyst
  • B is green
  • C is marigold
  • D is amethyst slag
  • E is marigold
  • F is amethyst

These jars are also found in other colors including white, aqua opal (only one reported), blue (stippled), horehound, ice blue, ice green, lavender and marigold (stippled). Powder Jar D, in amethyst slag, is most interesting. It has white swirls flowing throughout the amethyst base glass. The last two photos show it best.

Of further interest on these powder jars, Northwood used at least three moulds in the non-stippled version of this powder jar. This may not be new to some longtime collectors, but may be helpful and interesting for newbies to see.

Here are the three types of moulds with their respective letters:

  • wide cable =  A, B & C
  • backslash cable =  E
  • narrow cable = D & F

There are many other differences between the three moulds as well, i.e. height, rim width, number of grapes, and the placement of the grapes and the tendrils.

This delightful green powder jar was an eBay find many years ago and is still an interesting asset to our collection. Power to the powder jar! Especially this one. It's my favorite.
