Fenton Fine Rib Red Slag Vase

Description

This highly rare vase was a welcome addition to our collection in 2014 via the auction of the Jane Dinkins Estate of Texas collection.

At first glance it could be mistaken for amber, but this standard size Fine Rib really tried to be red. However it did not "strike" completely during the reheating phase of creating red Carnival Glass, hence the swirls of yellow and red throughout this beauty. This delightful oddity stands 10 1/4" in height.

We show the red slag vase on the left in a photo next to a red Fine Rib from the Marie Capps Collection. They look very much the same, but the yellow swirls can be seen in the smooth areas along the top edge. The bases look identical from the side, but the red slag one has yellow swirls, while the red one only has a faint yellow edge.

We show two photos that were taken under ultraviolet light that show the yellow swirls in the base. This glow is caused by the cadmium that was added to this glass batch in Fenton's failed attempt here to make a red Fine Rib Carnival Glass vase. Always take your portable black light with you when you're hunting for Carnival Glass. Vaseline Carnival Glass shows a strong greenish yellow glow, while yellow Carnival gives off this bright orange glow.
