Dugan Farmyard Purple Eight-Ruffled Bowl

Description

This excellent example of a Dugan Farmyard bowl is from the Ruth and late John Phillips Collection which sold at the International Carnival Glass Association (ICGA) convention auction of July 17, 2010. That year, this event took place in Clarksville, Indiana. I acquired it in 2011 from the person who bought it for someone else. Here is Ruth holding that bowl during that auction.

John & Ruth purchased it from the July 28, 1994 A.C.G.A. (American Carnival Glass Ass.) convention auction which was held in Worthington, Ohio that year. Below are photos from the Burns Auction Service catalog provided by Ruth Philips herself.

This auction featured the collection of Rovene Heaton from Muncie, Indiana plus a couple of extra consignments so the person who owned and consigned this bowl for this auction is not certain at this time.

If it looks familiar, it's the same Farmyard bowl that is pictured on the cover of David Doty's 2011 Field Price Guide.

This Dugan "Farmyard" purple eight-ruffled bowl is one of my most favorite things in the world. Back then, when I held it for the first time, I described it as, "My heart beats very quickly when I pick it up and I realize I'm holding the equivalent of pure happiness and splendor poured into a bowl. Peer inside and it will make you feel that you are bathing in the Grecian Mediterranean Mythological waters of the Gods! It's that beautiful Siren that lured the sailors to bash their vessels into the jagged rocks."

A bit dramatic, yes...but I still feel that way every time I hold it. This was the first piece of glass I was afraid of, literally. For the first few weeks I did not hold it more than twice. I was too afraid to break it. It was the most expensive item I ever bought at the time. Today, I consider it to be priceless!

Here also is the link of where to see it on Dave Doty's website.
