Cambridge Nearcut No. 2651 Inverted Feather Green Cracker Jar With Whimsey Bonbon

This was a first for me, bidding live on line at a major carnival glass auction. It was Feburary 11th, 2017 and the auction was Tampa Bays convention auction, selling glass of Gary & Sharon Vandevander.

Here I was, sitting in my recliner, watching an outdoor hunting show with our tablet in hand, watching the live bidding on line. I thought that this was pretty kewl indeed.



I ended up buying several items including this green, Inverted Feather cracker jar made by Cambridge. I bought this second, right after I bought the green Inverted Feather whimsey. The whimsey is the bottom of the cracker jar, shaped into a large bonbon.

The iridescence on the cracker jar is pretty good but the iridescence on the interior of the whimsey is "electric green" all around.This cracker jar is a rather large piece at 6 1/2" high and 8 1/2" from handle to handle. The whimsey is even larger at 9 1/4" from handle to handle and 9 3/4" across the bowl.

In visiting the Doty website, I see where these Inverted Feather whimsies have been reported. Just recently, after my purchase, Christina happened to spot my whimsey in the catalog from the 2007 Sunshine State Carnival Glass Ass. (no longer) convention auction. It featured the glass of Bill & Sandy Reyan being sold by Jim Wroda. The catalog photo, shown last, verifies it is indeed the same one I now own and not a third one. AND, if you look closely at the listing in the catalog, the next item, #50, was also the complete Cracker Jar that was sold right after this whimsey.

Little did I know they have been together for a long time. Gary Vandevander must have purchased them both! I'm so glad I decided to do the same...buy both of these to display together. I thought it would be kewl! I didn't know I was carrying on a tradition of keeping them together for years to come!

We are just thrilled to add this whimsey to our small collection of whimsies that we already have.
