Brockwitz Germany Curved Star (Zurich) Marigold Flower Bowl with Brass Grill

Description

We have certainly enjoyed adding some non-American patterns and pieces to our collection this past year and this piece is one of our top favorites. It sports a very pleasing geometric pattern and has fantastic rich and even iridescence, showing a palette of pink, blue, violet, and teal.

The design is considerably different from the European Curved Star vases that are more commonly seen. Thanks to catalogue pages kindly donated to Showcase by Carnival Glass philanthropist / collector Mr. Bob Smith of Boston, Massachusetts, we can see the original pages offering this item to the buying public by Brockwitz as “Zurich”. This shape was available in four sizes, as shown on the catalogue page and can now be attributed solely to Brockwitz. Other shapes in the Zurich (Curved Star) pattern were reported to have been made by both Eda and Karhula.

These quaint “flower pots with brass floral frog” are quite delightful to see and utilize. We met this beauty in person in November 2014 at the Mason City, Iowa Seeck auction of Cliff and the late JoAnn Ball Collection from Missouri. We had gone to the auction with certain lots in mind, but this was not one of them. When we saw it, we found it hard not to fall in love with this obscure beauty. This piece is in perfect condition with its original brass grill showing a lovely patina. It’s a gem on many levels and a very nice asset to our European Carnival Glass collection.

This piece is 5 ½” in height with the grill on, measures 6 ¾” in diameter and sports a ground base with a 6 point star impressed into the marie. This is a heavy, substantial piece of glass weighing in at 2 lbs. 4 oz.

You can be sure that we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears open to add another size of the Zurich flower pot to our collection in the future!
